The Allahabad High Court on Monday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a report on hanging over the Bulandshahr gangrapes case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The court, which took suo moto cognisance of the case, has given the state government time till August 10 to respond, reported The Tribune.

A 35-year-old woman and her teenage daughter were gangraped on the Delhi-Kanpur highway when the family was travelling from Noida to Shahjahanpur to attend a relative’s funeral. The men allegedly surrounded their car and then forced all of them into a field nearby. There, they assaulted the woman and the 15-year-old girl and robbed the family. The incident took place barely 100 metres from a police post in Bulandshahr.

The police, who were accused of inaction, later arrested three men who are reportedly part of a tribal gang. The kingpin of gang has also been identified but police have not arrested him. The state government suspended seven police officers and set up a 300-member task force to track down the accused. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also announced Rs 3 lakh compensation and a flat each to the two survivors.
