The brother of a Syrian boy whose pictures went viral last week, died on Saturday. A video that caught the bloodied face of a Syrian child, Omran Daqneesh, showed him sitting silently in an ambulance following airstrikes in his neighbourhood in the city of Aleppo. Reports said that his brother, 10-year-old Ali Daqneesh, died of injuries inflicted during the strikes. His mother also remains to be in critical condition.

Fighting in the besieged city of Aleppo (pictured above) has increased in recent months. The city, Syria’s largest and one that used to be an important economic hub, has seen air strikes and fighting between rebel groups and government forces that has left hundreds dead. The numbers of casualties in the region has been hard to ascertain, but according to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, more than 12,500 people, including more than 4,500 children, were killed over a 22-month period by Syrian and Russian air bombardment.
