JNU appeals court upholds punishments for 21 students over ‘anti-national’ event
The punishments awarded to Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya remain the same, even as the fines for some of the other students have been reduced.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Appellate Authority on Tuesday upheld the fines and punishments awarded to 21 students over an event held on its campus where “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised, The Indian Express reported. While the fines imposed on some students have been reduced, the court has upheld temporary rustication orders for Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya.
The Appellate Authority has said that the students will have to pay their fines along with a signed undertaking within two weeks. It added that they will also not take part in any “unauthorised event” and “ensure that there is no breach of discipline” on their part. Some students, however, have challenged the University’s final decision, saying that they will approach the Delhi High Court over the matter. “We will consult our lawyers on how to take this further,” said AP Narayan, one of the students.
The event, allegedly held in support of Parliament attacks convict Afzal Guru, was thrown into the national spotlight after a section of students there alleged that “anti-national” slogans were raised there. JNU Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested over the incident, with Khalid and Bhattacharya surrendering to the Delhi Police days later. A case of sedition was registered against the three students.
