A gunbattle broke out between militants and the police in Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday after attackers snatched two AK-47 from security forces posted in the Tumlahal Lassipora area. The post had been set up to protect members of the minority Kashmiri Pandit community, police said. A departmental inquiry into the incident has been ordered.

According to PTI, militants have been able to snatch at least 20 rifles after attacking similar outposts all over south Kashmir. On Friday, one police officer was killed, and two people were injured in a similar incident in the Shopian district.

The Kashmir Valley has been tense since July 8, when Indian forces killed Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. More than 80 people have died in the unrest, and relations between India and Pakistan have deteriorated. The violence has been made worse by the attacks in Kashmir’s Uri on September 18, in which four militants from across the border left 19 Indian soldiers dead.
