New index will rate public perception of corruption at 25 government agencies: Vigilance Commission
This includes the Railways among other organisations that deal directly with citizens.
The Central Vigilance Commission on Monday said it will soon devise an index to ascertain the public perception of corruption at various government agencies. A total of 25 organisations have been chosen under the scheme, among them Railways and Coal India. The Indian Institute of Management has been tasked with job of creating the index and its parameters within a year, PTI reported.
The agencies chosen will be mainly those with which citizens interact directly, Vigilance Commissioner TM Bhasin said. The commission’s plan is inspired by global indices such as Corruption Perceptions Index of Transparency International. It believes that better knowledge on whether corruption is increasing or decreasing will help root it out, and that the government does not have adequate data on the matter.
The commission is currently holding its Vigilance Awareness Week. “I am not very sure whether there are authentic studies, but we are certainly trying to bring awareness in people,” said Central Vigilance Commissioner KV Chowdary, on the need for such an index.
