Indian women's team registers six-wicket win against West Indies in 1st ODI
Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Veda Krishnamurthy steered the host team to victory.
India went 1-0 up in the three-match one-day international series as West Indies fell to the spin attack of the hosts at Vijayawada on Thursday. Rajeshwari Gayakwad (4/21) and Ekta Bisht (3/14) helped dismiss the Windies for 131. In reply, India recovered from a slow start. India was 36/4 before skipper Mithali Raj (46 not out) and Veda Krishnamurthy (52 not out) took them over the line.
After electing to bat first, West Indies were going steady at 42/1 when Bisht quickly broke through the top order. Barring Merissa Aguilleira (42 not out), there was not a single contribution of note from the West Indies batters. Gayakward was instrumental in dismissing the lower order.
India were in trouble as they lost four wickets in quick succession. However, Mithali Raj steered the team to safety. Krishnamurthy finished the game off with a six, which also brought up her half-century.
The second ODI will be played at Vijayawada on Sunday.
