A Delhi court on Tuesday convicted Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav of raping a 25-year-old woman in December last year. He was held guilty for rape, causing grievous bodily harm and for endangering the life of the woman. Yadav, who had pleaded not guilty, could be facing life imprisonment if the court decides to award the maximum punishment after arguments on sentencing are heard on Friday, reported the Hindu. During the trial, the court recorded statements of 28 prosecution witnesses including the victim, who identified Yadav as the one who raped her, reported the Indian Express.

The incident had stirred outrage across the country and renewed a fervent debate on the lack of safety for women in public spaces in the capital. It prompted the Delhi government to ban Uber and several other web-based taxi companies from operating in the city, for failing to carry out adequate background checks on drivers. Uber has since apologised for the incident and attempted to improve its security features.
