A “slow” Indian economy is today the fastest growing economy in the world, an open fact that this article seems to ignore (“Why is India’s middle class so silent about the slowing economy?”). The hatred for Narendra Modi has led to stories being invented to demonise the prime minister and his supporters. – Madhvesh

I agree with the title of the article. Reading the article one assumes that there will be some interviews of and statistics about those affected by the slowing economy. But apart from some random data by the National Statistics Office, an out-of-context quote by an HDFC executive and some comparison to China and Covid-19, there is little that corroborates what the title says. Why would anyone be encouraged to subscribe to Scroll when I can read such news and opinion in the comment section of any social media platform? – Emial Sofia

The article seems to be more concerned with inciting people rather than providing suggestions for economic growth. The people of Bharat are silent and working hard for the economic development of country. Foreign agencies and media houses want instability in our nation but the nationalist character of Bhartians is not swayed by false narratives. – Sanjay K Dhar

This article is pointedly telling the middle-class to create chaos and mayhem. The answer to the article’s question is that Hindutva replaces rising costs and people are quiet because of that. Has anyone pondered that if the middle class has shrunk, people in the lower class have come up? I have seen the upward mobility of all persons I have employed and others and I am happy about that. If it means subsidies, education and communication has enabled more people to be aspirational and lead a better life style, so be it. Middle class should stop whining. – Hema Khurana

This was an important issue but your efforts to bring it into limelight has failed to point out the actual problem. The essence of the topic has been diluted. – LAP Dipankar

Our culture and Hinduism are more important than the economy. What is the point of having a great economy when our existence is at threat due to appeasement. We will continue to vote for Narendra Modi as long as woke sites like Scroll exist. – Rajesh R

Why is the media, which is the representative of citizens, silent? Perhaps the issue has no commercial value for the media. – Sheilaraj

Indian middle class is self-centred and only wakes up when it comes to its personal interests. People will find ways and means to improve their income or curtail expenses but will avoid any collective approach. There will never be any mass agitation or attempt to make it a political or media issue. – Rakesh
