Almost 60 years after its release, Pather Panchali continues to enjoy iconic stature in the world of cinema. Among its many accolades, it was the Best Human Document at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. At the Vancouver film festival two years later on this date, August 16, 1958, the film won the best film prize, along with four other awards.
