Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Sangeet Som on Sunday announced a "mahapanchayat" (an informal council of villages) in his constituency of Sardhana in Meerut district to protest against what he claims are increasing incidents of "love jihad", cow slaughter and harassment of Hindu girls by Muslim youths. The legislator from Sardhana was accused last year of inciting communal tensions and making hate speeches against Muslims during the Muzaffarnagar riots.
West Bengal: Amit Shah slams Mamata Banerjee for Saradha scam
Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah on Sunday said that the Saradha chit fund scam will bring down the Mamata Banerjee-led government in state assembly elections scheduled for 2016. Addressing a rally in Kolkata for the party's by-poll candidate in the Chowringhee assembly seat, Shah said that his party would bring in better governance and overall development, unlike the present establishment.
Telangana, Andhra Pradesh: Massive floods wreak havoc
Heavy rainfall through Sunday resulted in severe floods across coastal Andhra Pradesh and some districts in Telangana. The Godavari and Vamsadhara are flowing over the danger mark, leaving numerous villages marooned and inundating vast swathes of agricultural land in its wake. Senior officials from both states have been issued orders to closely monitor the situation and evacuate affected persons. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department on Sunday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in both regions for Monday.
Assam: High fluoride and arsenic content found in Guwhati's water supply
Tests conducted by the Environmental Research and Evaluation Centre in Guwhati have found abnormal levels of arsenic and fluoride content in the city's water supply, especially in high-risk neighbourhoods like Lal Ganesh and Bonda. The centre found that of the 10 samples collected in Lal Ganesh, "two of them had abnormally high content of fluoride, which is 30% above the permissible quantity".
Manipur: State government changes plan to bring in petrol and natural gas supplies
In light of the bandh called on all state and national highways by United Naga Council, the government of neighbouring Manipur has devised a new plan to bring in essential petrol and cooking gas supplies. Instead of using the Imphal-Dimapur highway that goes through Nagaland, officials will use National Highway-37, which connects the state capital Imphal to Jiribham, located in Manipur's western corner. The earlier plan to transport tankers through Imphal-Dimapur highway was cancelled because of fears that bandh supporters would burn vehicles.
