Maharashtra: NCP sticks to demand for 144 seats in state assembly elections
Senior Nationalist Congress Party leaders are meeting on Monday to take a final call on their alliance with the Congress for October's assembly elections in Maharashtra. Their deadlock over the seat-sharing remains unresolved, as the Congress did not respond to NCP's demand that it be allowed to contest half of the 288 seats in the state assembly. “No new proposal has been received by the party", said senior NCP leader Praful Patel. "We stand by our original demand for 144 assembly seats." September 27 is the deadline for filing nominations.

Arunachal Pradesh: Dalai Lama to visit state next year
Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Sunday accepted an invitation by the Arunchal Pradesh government to visit the state in October next year. The Dalai Lama will visit Tawang, the West Kameng districts and the capital city Itanagar. The visit assumes significance because Beijing considers the state to be Chinese territory.

West Bengal: Jadavpur students protesting against ban on alcohol, says TMC
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek on Monday claimed that students from Jadavpur University were actually protesting against the ban on alcohol and drugs on the campus and not against the alleged molestation of a female student. "Is this protest due to the banning of drugs, liquor and charas?" Abhishek Banerjee said in a Facebook post. Students have boycotted classes to press their demand for the Jadvpur University Vice Chancellor's resignation.

Uttar Pradesh: ABVP vigilante groups to curb 'love jihad' on college campuses
Members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Sunday decided to set up vigilante groups on university campuses across the country to "keep a watch on Muslim youths who try to lure Hindu women to pursue their agenda of love jihad". During a two-day national meeting in Lucknow, volunteers were also ordered to warn Hindu women about the dangers of "social evils" like live-in relationships, pub culture and celebrating Valentine's Day.

Jammu and Kashmir: Many Srinagar residents unable to return to their homes
As relief efforts continued for the fifteenth day on Sunday, thousands of residents were still unable to return o their homes, as the process of dewatering around Srinagar was woefully slow. Srinagar's key commercial areas including Lal Chowk, Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh and Bemina remained out of bounds. Meanwhile, many people continued to complain about the absence of portable water, electricity and the accumulation of animal carcasses.
