The Gujarat government suspended SMS and mobile internet services in Vadodara on Saturday, after communal clashes between Hindus and Muslims engulfed the city. Police officials said that incidents of communal violence in the city had been attributed to misleading messages and images transferred through SMS and mobile applications such as WhatsApp and Facebook. "The government took the decision to suspend SMS and mobile internet service to prevent the spread of rumours," said a senior police official.
Tamil Nadu: Violence across the state after Jayalalithaa verdict
Violence broke out across Tamil Nadu on Saturday after the special court in Bangalore found Chief Minister Jayalalithaa guilty of accumulating huge assets through corrupt means. Shops, restaurants, malls and movie halls were closed down across the state, as All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party workers and sympathisers voiced their outrage at the court's decision. Demonstrations by party workers led to sporadic incidents of violence that left many public transport buses damaged. Thirty nine companies of the Tamil Nadu Special Police were deployed across the state to maintain law and order.
Maharashtra: Shiv Sena chief taunts former ally BJP
Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of "betrayal" by breaking their 25-year-old political alliance before Maharashtra goes to polls on October 15. Addressing his party's inaugural election rally, Thackeray said that BJP had made unreasonable demands during their seat-sharing negotiations. "Today, you have broken the alliance politically, but what you have damaged is the common thread of Hindutva,"he said. "No Hindu will forgive you for this" betrayal.
Andhra Pradesh: State government seeks governor's intervention in dispute with Telangana
The Andhra Pradesh government urged Governor ESL Narasimhan to intervene against the Telangana administration's take ver of 89 state-run corporations and 107 other training institutions based in Hyderabad. The Telangana government has also been accused of "threatening" several Andhra employees working at these corporations and training institutions, and failing to pay them their September salaries.
Chhattisgarh: Journalist with alleged Maoist links released from prison after 7 years
Former journalist Prafulla Jha, who was convicted on sedition charges in January 2008 for his alleged links with Maoist insurgents, was released from prison on Saturday. He had been found guilty of helping Maoists run their operations in the urban areas of Chhattisgarh.
