Students of several Delhi colleges gathered on the hockey grounds of the Indian Institute of Technology as early as 7.30 am on Sunday. They were there to try and break the Guinness record for the world’s longest selfie chain. Then, as the clock struck 2.30pm on a hot and humid Delhi afternoon, they did it: participant number 816 clicked his selfie, and loud cheers rang out.

The Guinness officials should approve the record within the next few days. The event was organised by a mobile phone company during IIT’s annual festival, Rendezvous.

Participants had to stand in a specific formation and click selfies of themself and their neighbor. Each photo had to have a part of the arm holding the phone and two faces clearly visible, and the time difference between two selfies could not exceed more than 60 seconds.

The current record stands at 279 people. They stood in the shape of Australia in July, as part of a beauty campaign.

As the excitement mounted, a Mexican wave went around the assembled spectators. VJ Bani from MTV was at the event providing a spark of energy as the sultry day dragged on.
