The Hindutva outfit Dharma Jagran Samiti on Tuesday temporarily called off plans to organise its biggest-ever religious reconversion event in Aligarh on December 25. It was instructed to do so by its parent organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, members said. Last week, a similar conversion event in Agra came under fire after it emerged that the group had lured in Muslim families to convert to Hinduism with the promise of Aadhar cards. The RSS is thought to have issued the orders to the samiiti after its "ghar wapsi" (homecoming) movement became an embarrassment for the Narendra Modi government in Parliament.
New Delhi: SC refuses Italian marines’ pleas to postpone chargesheeting
The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down the Italian marines’ pleas to allow them to stay on in Italy for longer on health grounds. Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone are going to be chargesheeted for killing two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala on February 15, 2012. Senior advocate Soli Sorabjee, speaking on behalf of the marines, said Latorre has a heart surgery scheduled for January 8. The bench of justices who will be hearing the case replied that they wanted the system to work, adding, “The trial has not commenced. Even the chargesheet has not been filed. It does not happen anywhere in the world. We are sorry. You finish the case and go back once and for all.”
Assam: IIT dean arrested for rape
The dean of academic affairs at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping an office assistant. The case registered against Alok Kumar Ghosal has been for "taking advantage of his official position and committing rape on a woman". He was examined by the police on Monday night, after which he was arrested.
Maharashtra: State wants Rs 3,500 for storm relief for farmers
Hailstorms in November and December flattened 60,000 hectares of cultivated land in Maharashtra, according to Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse. On Tuesday, the state government sought a package of Rs 3,500 crore from the Centre to help the affected farmers. This package will come over and above the Rs 7,000 crore for debt relief and Rs 34,500 crore for drought relief already requested.
Tamil Nadu: Schoolgirl found dead with knife injuries
On Tuesday, a 12-year-old school student was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Vellore. The girl was reported missing on Monday. The police found that her hands, legs and the mouth were bound with her ribbons, while her dupatta was tied around her neck. On the basis of knife injuries on her person, the police suspect a case of rape and murder. They have picked up some local youths from her nearby hometown for questioning.
