A cold wave has swept across north India as snowfall in higher reaches and rains led to chilly conditions. In Uttar Pradesh, icy winds from the hills swept across the state, leading to a drop in temperatures. Lucknow was the coldest, with minimum temperature of 6.6 degrees Celsius. Himachal Pradesh too struggled in the snow as snowfall disrupted life in many places. In Uttarakhand, 30 people died in the hills. Thirteen of them died in the Kumaon region alone, while three died in Nainital and two collapsed in Haldwani. The Disaster Mitigation Centre said the weather conditions are hindering its attempts to gather more details.

The BJP wants to first overthrow the Congress as the main opposition party in the state and then become the largest party there before the 2019 Assembly elections.
