On Friday, negotiations to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir hit multiple deadlocks after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s push for a Hindu Chief Minister appeared to have pushed the National Conference party toward its rival People’s Democratic Party. At the same time, the BJP is no closer to a deal with the PDP either, the latter demanding that party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed be CM for the next six years, a cabinet berth at the Centre and Rs 9,800 crore for flood relief. The BJP’s earlier confidence stemmed from having a substantial 25 seats, although word has now emerged that Sayeed appreciated NC leader Omar Abdullah’s gesture on Friday of willingness to form an alliance.
Sun Network COO arrested for sexual harassment
The Chief Operating Officer of Sun Network was on Friday arrested by the Central Crime Branch on charges of harassing a female colleague at the workplace. According to the police, the woman had been repeatedly subjected to sexual abuse and humiliation, before she quit in May 2014. Others in the office noticed when the executive, Praveen C, abruptly transferred her to Kochi while her child was attending school in Chennai. She also had her salary withheld.
Nadella promises to increases investment in India
On Friday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella met Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and promised to increase investments in India. This is Nadella’s second trip to India since he took over as CEO of the $86-billion software giant. Sources said he was keen to partner with the government on initiatives like "Digital India", and in the modernisation and security of the government’s digital infrastructure.
One of Peshawar attack’s orchestrators killed
A political representative in Pakistan announced on Friday that the Pakistani security forces had killed a key militant named Saddam affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and responsible for orchestrating the December 16 Peshawar attack. A political agent of the Khyber Agency said, “Saddam had been killed in the Gundi area of Jamrud by the security forces in an operation yesterday”, adding that one of his accomplices has been captured alive.
Hackers target South Korean nuclear power plants operator
South Korea has increased security around its nuclear power plants after it emerged on Friday that one of their operators was subjected to a cyber-attack by hackers of unknown origins. Authorities are unsure if the Pyongyang was the source of the attack but they could not rule that out, given the recent alleged attack on Sony Pictures. They added that some sensitive documents were released online by the hackers after they managed to plant 300 different types of malware in the network using email addresses of retired employees.
