New Delhi: First swine flu death in 2014 in NCR
On Friday, the year’s first swine flu death was recorded, with a 51-year-old woman from Ghaziabad succumbing viral infection in a Delhi hospital. She had been admitted to the hospital days after her lung functioning collapsed. At least three deaths due to similar infections were reported in Hyderabad recently. According to experts, the virus proliferates the most during winter.

Himachal Pradesh: Bilaspur to be the seat of state’s proposed AIIMS
The state government on Friday announced that it would set up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Bilaspur, the hometown of Union Health Minister JP Nadda, ending months of deliberation. Other areas in contention were Kangra, Mandi and Hamirpur. A spokesperson said Bilaspur was chosen because of its proximity to five nearby important districts: Solan, Mandi, Hamirpur, Una and Shimla.

Manipur: Grenade blast injures four outside Imphal
A grenade exploded on the outskirts of Imphal late on Friday night, injuring four persons. Witnesses claim to have seen suspected militants lobbing the explosive not far from a shop, whose owner was being interrogated by the local police. The motive for the attack was not immediately clear but the police said they suspected a case of extortion.

Uttar Pradesh: Winter gets colder as death toll due to cold climbs to 100
Saturday morning brought fog and icy winds with renewed intensity to the state, reducing visibility and hitting rail and road transport. As of Friday, the death toll due to the chilly climate had climbed to 100. The regional meteorological authority said the temperatures would drop further. The coldest place in the state on Friday was Agra, at 3.3 degrees Celsius.

Kerala: Private clinical labs in state in woeful state
The Directorate of Economics and Statistics said on Friday that over 93% of private medical laboratories in Kerala were functioning without accreditation. It added in a report that the state’s health department exercised ‘zero control’ over private clinical laboratories, and that the units relied on the support of local bodies to continue operating. It also pointed out that 26% of all the laboratories used unreliable equipment.
