Hindi movies usually stay away from the first week of a new year since business is slow and audiences haven’t yet tired of the Christmas vacation’s big release (Rajkumar Hirani’s PK this season). Thus, the first week of 2015 will see low-key openings, including Angelina Jolie’s second directorial effort.

Unbroken

Angelina Jolie has directed one movie previously, In The Land of Blood and Honey. Her second effort is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s non-fiction book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption.

It is the stirring account of American Olympian athlete Louis Zamperini, who was stranded on a raft for days during the second world war and rescued by Japanese soldiers, only to be subjected to brutal slave labour in prisoner of war camp. Jack O’Connell plays the runner while Japanese actor and singer Mayavi plays the notorious Mutsuhiro Watanabe, nicknamed “The Bird” and presented in American WWII accounts as a war criminal for his brutality.

The Woman in Black: Angel of Death

This sequel to the successful Daniel Radcliffe movie from 2012 sees the malevolent spirit on a new spine-chilling adventure.

Set during WWII, Angel of Death is set in an abandoned mansion in rural England where a group of school children have taken shelter from the unending bombings. What’s worse, the war or the woman in black’s temper?
