Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign for assembly elections in the national capital on Saturday as it traded allegations with the rival Aam Aadmi Party. Implying that the AAP’s leader Arvind Kejriwal was an anarchist, Modi asked him to join "the Naxals in the jungles". He reiterated the BJP’s poll promises, especially of uninterrupted power supply and housing for all. In his 35-minute speech, he also attacked the Congress. Kejriwal responded to Modi’s remarks, targeting him for making unfulfillable poll promises and for failing to assure the safety of women in Delhi.
Jharkhand: New health violations at Jharkhand medical camp
The Health Department of Jharkhand on Saturday identified violations of multiple protocols at a medical camp in Chatra district held on January 7. The district administration has already blacklisted the organiser, an NGO called Janani Surya Clinic, for performing over 40 post-operative procedures under the light of flashlights and for operating without a license. However, the NGO responded that the government had not provided a lab technician to perform screening tests and that the government’s fee of Rs 380 per procedure was insufficient as the incurred cost was Rs 650-Rs 700 per procedure.
Uttar Pradesh: Complaint filed against Qureshi for pro-terror remarks
A complaint was lodged with the Ghaziabad police on Sunday against Bahujan Samaj Party leader Haji Yakub Qureshi for defending the terror attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Qureshi, a former state minister, had said that whoever ridiculed the Prophet would invite death, and went on to announce a cash reward of Rs 51 crore for the attackers. The complaint was made by Hindu Swabhiman Manch leader Anil Yadav.
Tamil Nadu: Ancient murals defaced by artists engaged in restoration
Several hundred ancient murals at the Kuttralanatha Swamy Temple in Kuttralam have been ravaged by local artists engaged in their conservation using gaudy colours, it emerged on Saturday. Art historians who were examining the murals allege that they had been badly repainted between 2010 and 2013 after noticing that a shade of electric blue had been used repeatedly in all backgrounds. The restoration work was sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu government in 2008 but without adequate supervision.
West Bengal: Mamata gives cash awards to 7,000 sports clubs
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave away cash awards totalling Rs 105 crore to sports personalities and some 7,000 sports clubs in the state on Saturday, during an event organised to celebrate Swami Vivekananda’s 152nd birthday. She lamented the absence of the sports minister Madan Mitra, who was arrested last month for his alleged involvement in the Saradha scam. The former hockey Olympian Gurbax Singh and former footballer Chunni Goswami were felicitated with lifetime achievement awards.
