Maharashtra: Jawans vandalise police station in Nashik
On Wednesday, a group of army jawans attacked and vandalised a police station in Nashik district and beat up police personnel. The attack was a reprisal for an FIR being filed against an army officer for "obstructing a government servant on duty" after a run-in with a police officer at the Upnagar police station, officials said. A woman police officer said that the jawans had arrived on motorbikes and been on a rampage for half-an-hour, locking her up in her cabin.

Assam: Assam follows suit, bans traditional games involving animals
Organisers of competitions involving animals were miffed at the start of Bhogali Bihu celebrations on Wednesday after the state government issued a directive banning traditional buffalo fights, bulbul-fights and cock-fights. District authorities focused on games in Morigaon and Kamrup districts. Fights involving animals and birds have been major attractions during the Assamese harvest festival, which coincides with Makar Sankranti, which began on Wednesday. The directive follows a Supreme Court order banning similar contests in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

Uttar Pradesh: SIT gives clean chit to six accused in Shahnawaz murder case
A special investigation team investigating a murder that occurred during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots in the same district has given a clean chit to six of the accused. A closure report was filed on Wednesday by the SIT inspector, Sampurnanad Tiwari. The case pertained to the death of Shahnawaz, who was allegedly stabbed by eight people at Kawal village in the district on August 27, 2013. Two of the accused had later been lynched by a mob in Kawal. The incident led to widespread tension in Muzaffarnagar district and adjoining districts of Shamli, Baghpat, Meerut and Saharanpur.

New Delhi: Brahma as next CEC will oversee Delhi polls
Former bureaucrat Harishankar Brahma will succeed Veeravalli Sundaram Sampath  as Chief Election Commissioner when Sampath retires on Thursday. Brahma hails from Assam, and is an IAS officer from the 1975 batch of Andhra Pradesh cadre. He had assumed charge as one of the three election commissioners of India in August 2010. After JM Lyngdoh, Brahma will become the second officer from the country’s North East to be appointed to the post. He will oversee the Delhi polls.

Kerala: Chandy moves to forestall plummeting rubber prices
On Tuesday, the government of Kerala asked the Central government to restrict rubber imports after prices started to fall considerably in the state. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy also asked the rubber industry to be integrated better with the "Make in India" national scheme. Chandy and state leader of Opposition, VS Achuthanandan, jointly met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. They said that over 3.25 lakh metric tonnes of natural rubber had been imported even though there was a local stock of 1.8 lakh metric tonnes, leading to rubber prices being slashed.
