Of the 119 nations featured, India, Nepal and Pakistan have the lowest living costs, while Switzerland, Norway and Venezuela have the highest.
The map is made from a database of user-contributed information on cities and nations. “The Consumer Price Index, used to determine the differences in living costs between countries, takes into account the prices of groceries, restaurants, utilities and transportation,” the website said. It does not, however, include rent for accommodation.
A relative indicator, the index compares the costs of living in all cities to New York. For example, India’s score of 26.27 means that Indians enjoy 73.73% cheaper living costs than the residents of New York.
