Janata Dal (United) senior leader Nitish Kumar took oath as chief minister of Bihar on Sunday returning to power in the state for the fourth time. Nitish had quit the post on May 17, 2014 following the party’s dismal show in Lok Sabha elections. He was invited to form the government on Friday after Jitan Ram Manjhi, who took over from Kumar last year, resigned ahead of the trust vote. Kumar and 22 other ministers were administered the oath of office by Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi at the Raj Bhawan. He promised to carry on the task of good governance and repair the damage done to Bihar under Manjhi’s tenure. Chief Ministers of West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav attended the ceremony. He will have to prove his majority on the floor of the house on March 16. Kumar is said to have the backing of 130 MLAs in the 233-member assembly.
West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee’s aide arrested for fraud
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s aide Shibaji Panja was arrested on Sunday for an alleged case of fraud. Panja, who accompanied the chief minister on her three-day visit to Bangladesh was arrested at the airport. He had allegedly taken a loan of Rs 18 crore by submitting forged documents to the Industrial Financial Corporation, a government organisation which lends short term loans. Later in the day, the chief minister hit back at the media for questioning Panja’s arrest. "I should have arrested you, be glad you are not in jail. Why ask me about the arrest, I condemn your attitude," she said.
Jammu & Kashmir: Three IEDs recovered in Kashmir
The Indian army on Saturday recovered three Improvised Explosive Devices weighing 11 kgs in North Kashmir's Kupwara district. The army had acted on a specific intelligence and carried out search operations at Gazrial forest in Trehgam area. They also recovered three mortar bombs, three UBGL grenades, 61 rounds of AK47 and one Chinese pistol with magazine.
Maharashtra: Left parties observe bandh in state
Left parties observed a bandh in the state on Sunday to protest against the murder of communist leader Govind Pansare who died on Saturday after he was shot by unidentified assailants. Opposition Congress and Nationalist Congress Party too joined the protests. Republican Party of India leader Ramdas Athawale participated in a protest in Chembur, a suburban town in Mumbai. Athwale demanded a CBI probe into Pansare’s murder. The police have found no clues in the case and have announced a reward of five lakh rupees for any leads in identifying the culprits. Pansare and his wife were shot on February 16 while the couple had gone out for a morning walk.
Uttar Pradesh: Lok Adalat in Gazhiabad clears 5,988 cases in a day
The district legal cell in Gazhiabad held a special Lok Adalat (People’s court) on Sunday in which it cleared 5,988 cases. The special cell was organised with an aim to provide justice to the economically weaker sections of the society. Vijay Kumar Dungarkoti, secretary of the cell said that a fine of Rs 4.22 lakhs was recovered. A similar special session will be held at Modi Nagar and Loni town on March 14.
