The Gujarat government on Tuesday said that it had sought an investigationfrom the central government into the claimed misuse of funds by a non-governmental organisation run by activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband, Javed Anand. “We learnt that the funds which they received, especially from the Ford Foundation, were actually used for disturbing the communal harmony and carrying out anti-national propaganda,” said state Home Minister Rajnikant Patel. The state police have submitted a report on the issue, added Assistant Commissioner of Police KN Patel. Police had earlier filed a case of financial embezzlement against Setalvad and four others over the misuse of funds for the construction of a museum dedicated to victims of the Gulberg Society massacre in Ahmedabad during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Maharashtra: IB issues terror alert for Mumbai
The Intelligence Bureau on Tuesday issued an alert for a terrorist attack in Mumbai similar to the 2008 attacks. The Railways Police Commissioner wrote to the Anti-Terrorism Squad warning that 8-10 Pakistani militants would try to enter Mumbai via the sea and target railway stations and hotels. The IB stated that the militants would most likely be suicide bombers and would be from the Lashkar-e-Taiba. The militant outfit had claimed responsibility for the 2008 attacks in the city, which resulted in over 166 people dead after a three-day battle with security forces.
Jammu and Kashmir: Army insists dead man was a militant
The Army on Tuesday denied claims that a man killed in an anti-militancy encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Tral area was a civilian. Insisting that the man was a member of the Hizbul Mujahideen, an army spokesperson said the encounter on Monday took place when a patrol came under fire from militants. The man, Khalid Wani, was the brother of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan, said the spokesperson. However area residents staged protests on Tuesday morning, claiming that Wani had no links with militants.
Bihar: Centre working on special package for state
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that the central government was working towards a Rs 20,000 crore special package for Bihar at the launch of the Bharatiya Janata Party's state poll campaign in Patna. He claimed that the Nitish-Lalu Prasad Yadav alliance would take Bihar back to the “bad old days”. BJP President Amit Shah added, “Your Janata merger is of no consequence as zero plus zero is zero.” Meanwhile, BJP state unit leader Sushil Kumar Modi asked people to vote for the BJP to allow the Centre and the State to work in synchronisation.
Haryana: Khattar announces SC quotas
People belonging to Scheduled Castes in Haryana would get reservations in promotions, said state Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday. The reservations would be based on the recommendations of the Raghavendra Rao committee, he added. The announcement was made at a function held to celebrate the birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar. Khattar also said that cases filed against members of the scheduled communities who had protested to demand the reservations would be withdrawn.
