Bihar: Lalu, Mulayam announce nomination
Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar was named the chief ministerial candidate for the anti-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition of parties for the forthcoming Bihar state elections. The announcement was made on Monday by Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, in the presence of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. "I had asked Mulayam ji to decide and said we'd all accept it," Lalu Prasad said.

Jharkhand: 12 killed in state's Palamu district
Security forces killed at least 12 suspected CPI (Maoist) members on Monday in an operation by the Combat Battalion for Resolute Action and the Jharkhand Police. The encounter reportedly took place after the suspected rebels opened fire on security forces who were checking their vehicles. The gun fight went on until 2 am after which bodies of at least 12 members were found along with eight firearms and 200 rounds of ammunition.

Assam: Over 60,000 affected by floods
More than 60,000 residents in nine districts of Assam have been affected by heavy rainfall caused by the advance of the monsoons, officials said. Officials said that the heavy showers could lead to the flooding of the Brahmaputra and Jia Bharali rivers, which are already flowing over the danger mark in certain districts of the state. Lakhimpur district in northern Assam is the worst-hit district with over 25,000 people being affected. An estimated 331 hectares of crop area has been damaged. Officials have said relief camps and supplies are being arranged for the affected areas and have added that the situation is "not grim".

Delhi: CM releases funds for striking workers
Striking municipal workers in the state of Delhi received some financial assistance as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the release of Rs 500 crore on Monday. “I have sought time on Tuesday from Arun Jaitley to discuss the issue and ensure that your salaries are disbursed on time this month at least," he told workers. "However, if they aren’t, please protest outside the homes of Union Ministers responsible instead of ours.”

Andhra Pradesh: FIRs filed against KCR
Senior Telugu Desam Party members filed First Information Reports in Andhra Pradesh against Telangana Chief Minister and Telugu Rashtra Samithi leader K Chandrashekar Rao for tapping the phones of Andhra Pradesh ministers, including Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. The move came a day after local TV networks in the state aired a phone conversation that allegedly featured Naidu approving a bribe to a legislator to vote in favour of his party. Speaking at a rally in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district on the same day, Naidu claimed rival and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was trying to humiliate and conspire against him.
