Bihar: Amit Shah to attend meetings in Patna
The Bharatiya Janata Party's campaign in the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar is likely to focus on characterising the ties established by the Janata Dal's (United), the Rashtriya Janta Dal and the Congress as an "opportunistic alliance, formed solely to gain power", officials said. BJP president Amit Shah’s began a two-day visit to Patna on Saturday evening to participate in meetings to finalise the party's strategy. "Our focus will be on offering a comparison of how the government performed when the BJP was a part of the alliance with the Janata Dal (United) and after we parted ways," a top BJP leader said.

West Bengal: Villagers in Bengal kill leopard
Villagers in West Bengal's Purulia village killed a leopard in front of a police officer on Saturday afternoon. According to reports, the leopard strayed into the village. After alerting the police, the villagers surrounded the animal, which climbed on to a tree. The police were pressured to shoot the animal. When Assistant Sub-Inspector Seemanta Tantubai pulled out his gun, the leopard attacked, injuring two villagers as well as Tantubai. The bystanders then killed the animal and hung its body from a tree. Forest officials did not arrive at the scene until much later.

Andhra Pradesh: Journalists protest notices served by police
A group of more than 20 senior journalists protested against the Andhra Pradesh police on Saturday for serving legal notices on the T News channel, calling the move an attempt to "terrorise and mute the press" by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The Andhra government has issued notices, evoking the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act 1995 which prevents the airing of content that "creates enmity within Telugu linguistic communities". Allam Narayana, chairman of the Press Academy, said that Naidu "is only brewing enmity" between Andhra and Telangana "by unleashing the police against the media".

Maharashtra: Official suspended after ACB raid
Maharashtra's Information Commissioner Deepak Deshpande was suspended after he was named in connection with a corruption case. The Anti Corruption Bureau searched Deshpande's properties last week after filing a First Information Report alleging that he had helped get a property developer's proposal approved to build a regional transport office in Andheri. The ACB claims to have found unearthed multiple houses, vehicles and gold owned by Deshpande, and assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Deshpande is part of the same investigation that key accused Chhagan Bhujbal, former Public Works Department minister and Nationalist Congress Party member, has been named in.

Chhattisgarh: Nun assaulted in medical centre
A 45-year-old nun was allegedly sexually assaulted in a medical centre run by Christian missionaries in the state capital of Raipur on Saturday. The nun was found semi-clad, unconscious and tied up, the police said. Officials said the nun first said she was raped, but later claimed it was attempt to rape. "She said two masked men entered her room in search of cash and valuables and assaulted her after they failed to find their booty," said Inspector General GP Singh. Two women constables have been charged to help the survivor feel comfortable and narrate the incident coherently, he added.
