Maharashtra: DU professor Saibaba gets bail for medical treatment
Delhi University professor GN Saibaba was on Friday
released from a prison in Nagpur more than a year after he was arrested on charges of being a top cadre of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). The literature professor, who is wheelchair bound with 90% disability, was granted bail by the Bombay High Court to treat a degenerative spine disease and other neurological ailments. On his release, Saibaba equated Nagpur's Central Jail to Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison to highlight the torture of inmates. He said the jail administration had not physically tortured him but had been "ruthless" with regard to its treatment of other inmates.
Gujarat: HC dismisses petition against Modi on defective affidavit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday
got relief from the Gujarat high court with regard to a petition claiming he had concealed his marital status. Acting Chief Justice VM Sahai dismissed a criminal application seeking action against the former Gujarat chief minister for allegedly filing a defective affidavit during the 2012 assembly elections. The judge said there was a delay in lodging the complaint and that the petitioner had failed to mention in his application that he had acquired knowledge of Modi's alleged offence only in 2014. Modi had revealed his marital status while filing his nomination from Vadodara for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections but had left the same field blank during the 2012 assembly polls.
Kerala: Case against legislator for pushing district official
A woman legislator of Communist Party of India was on Friday booked for allegedly
manhandling the Idukki Additional District Magistrate and obstructing him from performing his duty. According to the police, the scuffle took place in Peruvanthanam area during a protest by locals against a court-ordered re-installation of a gate at the entrance of an estate which blocked the road. When Moncy P Alexander and the police came to erect the gate, local MLA ES Bijimol allegedly pushed him. Bijimol claimed the ADM was hand-in-glove with the estate owners. She denied beating up Alexander and said that had she not intervened, the locals would have taken him to task.
Jammu and Kashmir: Jawan, militant killed as infiltration bid foiled
One jawan was killed on Friday as the army foiled an
infiltration bid in the Uri sector of Kashmir. A militant was also killed in the operation. An army official said that troops were deployed on Friday morning near the Line of Control in Bonyar area of Baramulla district following information about the presence of three or four militants in the area. He said that as the forces zeroed in on the area, they were fired upon by the militants and a gun battle ensued. A jawan died in the encounter while another was injured. The encounter continued through the day.
Jharkhand: Girls kills self after parents say no to toilet in home
A 17-year-old girl has allegedly
committed suicide in Jharkhand's Dumka district following a heated argument over her parents' refusal to build a toilet at home. According to the police, the parents of the Class 12 student had told their daughter that they could not afford a toilet as they needed the money to marry her off. Family members found her hanging from the ceiling of her room on Friday. The girl had on various occasions pleaded with her parents to construct a toilet at home as she was ashamed of having to defecate openly in the fields.
