West Bengal: Infant drowns in Kolkata downpour
An infant drowned as the season's heaviest rainfall in Kolkata caused chaos and resulted in waterlogging in several areas of the city on Friday. Residents had to wade through knee-deep to waist-deep areas in several areas of the city including Park Street, Park Circus, Behala and Belgachia. Police were seen monitoring the situation on a boat in the southern part of the city. Traffic movement was affected while only a section of the state-run bus services were in operation. The Met department said that more than 16 cm of rainfall was received in some areas, attributing the downpour to a low pressure area near Jharkhand. An official said that heavy rain was not expected in the next 48 hours.
Uttarakhand: ITBP jawan kills colleague at IAS institute
A jawan belonging to the 34th battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police on Friday allegedly shot at two colleagues outside a prestigious civil services institute in Mussoorie, leaving one dead and the other in critical condition. According to police, the firing was preceded by heated arguments between the accused, Chandra Shekhar, and subedar Surendra Lal outside the main gate of Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. When colleague Akthar Hussain tried to intervene, the accused fired at him too. After opening fire, Shekhar escaped by running into the nearby jungle with a light machine gun and 100 bullets. While Lal died after sustaining three bullet wounds, Hussain is currently battling for his life.
Karnataka: IIT graduate arrested for stalking junior
The Bengaluru police on Friday arrested a graduate of IIT Kanpur for allegedly stalking a young woman who was his junior at the institute. The accused, a 24-year-old Agra native currently working in Mumbai, was arrested for online harassment of the woman, a Bengaluru resident and an employee of a top e-commerce company. Both were students of IIT Kanpur three years ago. According to the woman's complaint, the accused began harassing her in 2012 on social media and via emails by posting vulgar comments after she rejected his overtures. She contacted the police when he called her on the phone and threatened to come to Bengaluru and kill her.
Jammu and Kashmir: Amarnath Yatra halted due to inclement weather
The Amarnath Yatra was on Friday suspended on two routes owing to incessant rainfall since the previous night. A police official said slippery tracks on the Baltal and Pahalgam routes had forced the suspension of the pilgrimage. Landslides triggered by the rainfall also resulted in the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar highway, leaving more than 2,000 passenger vehicles stranded. Officials said that 68 vehicles carrying Amarnath pilgrims had been asked to stop near Kud and Patnitop, adding that the Border Road Organisation had been pressed into service to restore connectivity. This was the second time in 24 hours that the Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed following heavy rains.
Tamil Nadu: Plane hit by aerobridge at Chennai airport
A Go Air plane with 168 passengers on board was damaged on Friday after being hit by an overbridge at Chennai airport. The collision took place because the operator was allegedly on the phone when the aircraft was aligning itself with the aerobridge. The operator was allegedly "moving very fast" despite warnings from airline staff. The aircraft had a punctured fuselage after being hit by the overbridge. No injuries were sustained by the passengers or crew. The plane was grounded and passengers had to exit the aircraft from the rear door using a step ladder.
