Three people were killed and 11 others injured after a cloudburst triggered flash floods near the Baltal base camp of the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday evening. Two of those killed were minors, a senior police officer said. Some of the more seriously injured have been airlifted to Srinagar for treatment, while a search-and-rescue operation has been launched in the area to trace any missing persons. A defence spokesperson said the Army had rescued around 2,000 people from landslide-affected areas near the base camps on the pilgrimage route. The Yatra itself was suspended from the Baltal route, as also was the traffic on the Srinagar-Leh highway. “There was a landslide on the Srinagar-Leh highway and efforts are on to make the road motorable,” Deptuy Police Commissioner GS Ajaz said.
Delhi: Police planning to send notice to government
The Delhi police are planning to send a notice to the Arvind Kejriwal-led government in the state over advertisements relating to the murder of a 19-year-old woman in the Anand Parbat are of central Delhi on July 16, police officers said on Sunday. The officers said that while the adverts claimed the victim was stabbed 32 times, the official autopsy report showed she was stabbed eight times. However, Delhi government officials said they had not received any communication from the police on the matter. The advertisements, which have been on air since Monday, are the latest flashpoint in the ongoing tussle between the state government and Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung over the control of key departments affecting Delhi’s administration.
Haryana: INLD leader alleges spying by Khattar government
Indian National Lok Dal leader AS Chautala on Saturday accused the Manohar Lal Khattar-led government in the state of tapping his phones and spying on him. Chautala said the Bharatiya Janata Party government was following in the footsteps of the previous Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led administration by “misusing” the state’s Criminal Investigation Department. He alleged there was “no single leader” from the opposition who was not being spied on, adding that Khattar was even spying on his own colleagues such as state Health Minister Anil Vij. On Friday, Vij allegedly caught an assistant sub-inspector of the CID spying on him. The ASI reportedly told the minister that he had been ordered to keep a tab on him on the orders of a senior CID official.
Uttar Pradesh: One arrested in connection with Asaram witness murder
One person was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday in connection with the murder of a key witness in a rape case registered against self-styled godman Asaram Bapu. Narayan Pandey admitted to his role in the killing of Kripal Singh, who was shot by two men on a motorbike in Shahjahanpur on July 10, the police said. While professional shooters murdered Singh, Pandey and three others hatched the conspiracy to kill him. The police added that Singh was offered between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh for his silence, but his refusal to accept the bribe led to the conspiracy to eliminate him. Pandey was later produced in a court and sent to jail. Asaram, who has been in prison since September 2013, was booked along with his son Narayan Sai for the alleged rape of two sisters.
West Bengal: Congress leader indicates possible alliance with CPI(M)
West Bengal Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Saturday indicated that the party was considering a possible alliance with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for the 2016 assembly elections in the state. He referred to senior CPI(M) leader Gautam Deb’s remarks, who had earlier said that there was a need for a larger unity of opposition parties to defeat the Trinamool Congress. While Deb had also alleged that the Left Front was not strong enough to win the elections, CPI(M) General-Secretary Sitaram Yechury had later dismissed his comments. “The media in Bengal is not so stupid as to speculate without any reason,” Chowdhury said.
