Let it Go

Performed by Idina Menzel

Play

I choose to ring in the new year by singing along (that is, screaming my lungs out) to this Oscar-award winning Disney masterpiece, composed and written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. In the film, Frozen, the song is used to describe Princess Elsa (voiced by Broadway actress Idina Menzel) taking her life into her own hands (literally and figuratively) and completely embracing her powers, even if it means she has to leave her loving sister and her kingdom behind.

She travels to foreign lands and makes a new life for herself that includes a beautiful ice palace, a gorgeous new gown and the loveable snowman Olaf. She sings about how this new identity has made her realise that she’s strong, independent and capable of doing anything.

The musical arrangement and catchy hook of Let It Go always lifts me up, even if the world around me is falling apart. Princes Elsa describes my feelings exactly, as she croons, “Let the storm rage on, the cold never bothered me anyway.”
