The Indian homemaker is the CEO of the family. She keeps the household running, from making sure all chores are done to acting as a pillar of support for the rest of the family. Indian homemakers are often excellent managers, budgeting the family income and multitasking while making it all look effortless, but their skills are appreciated only in their homes. What are their aspirations beyond home and domestic responsibilities?

A survey by Britannia Marie Gold and Nielsen sought to explore the dreams and ambitions of Indian homemakers. In the Marie Gold Indian Women Entrepreneurship survey, about 48% of the respondents said that before marriage they had dreams of starting their own business or monetising a hobby. One in two even said they had hoped to become financially independent when young. But these homemakers have been constrained by lack of capital and relevant skills which are needed to start a business.

With the My Startup Contest, Britannia Marie Gold wants to break down these barriers and fuel women to become ‘homepreneurs’. Its season one was a massive success and received over a million entries from homemakers all over the country. The top 10 winners received Rs 10 lakh each as capital support for their venture. Five out of 10 winners from season one of My Startup Contest continue to run a full-fledged business today.

Now, My Startup Contest is back with Season 2 and this time it seeks to impact 10,000 families. In association with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Britannia Marie Gold has launched India’s first skill development programme which has been customised for homemakers with entrepreneurial aspirations. The certified training programme will train the selected participants in the startup mindset as well entrepreneurial expertise. To see how the My Startup Contest gives wings to the winners’ dreams, watch the video below.
