Food security has always been a concern for India. Despite having the largest stock of grain in the world — 120 million tonnes. Even before the pandemic, India had the highest number of undernourished people globally. According to the latest edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, between 2018-2020, food insecurity in India rose by about 6.8 percentage points.
The biggest challenge to food security is ensuring that all people have access to enough food to lead productive lives and Food Science has great potential to address the various dimensions of Food Security. If utilized optimally, new and existing technologies can help us raise crop and livestock productivity, improve soil fertility and increase the amount of food produced.
