India win by 5 wickets!

Rishabh Pant seals the deal. India needed 3 off 3 and the left-hander stepped out to hit it over mid-off for four. New Zealand fought back valiantly but the hosts take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

IND 160/5 after 19.4 overs: OUT! Venkatesh Iyer, on debut, smashes his first ball for four but then attempts a reverse scoop and is caught at short-third. India need 5 off 4. Axar is the new batter and he’s on strike.

IND 155/4 after 19 overs: OUT! Iyer (5 off 8) hits it to long-off. New Zealand have pulled things back in the 18th and 19th overs thanks to Ferguson and Southee. India find themselves in a serious spot of bother with 6 balls remaining. They need 10 to win. Debutant Venkatesh Iyer is the new batter and he’s on strike. Daryl Mitchell to bowl the last over.

IND 149/3 after 18 overs: Good over from Ferguson, just five runs from it. He finishes with figures of 0/24 from his four overs. India need 16 off 12. Captain Southee with the ball in hand.

IND 144/3 after 16.4 overs: OUT! Suryakumar steps across and attempts a scoop but is clean bowled by Boult. The end of a special knock from the right-hander. He walks back for 62 off 40. The new batter is Shreyas Iyer.

IND 142/2 after 16 overs: Big over! Pant steps out to Southee and absolutely smashes one past cover for four, before Suryakumar threads the gap between backward point and short-third. The right-hander then flicks one to Boult at fine-leg but the ball goes through for four. It was a straightforward catch but Boult seemed to not sight the ball properly.

IND 121/2 after 14.1 overs: Fifty for Suryakumar! He gets his third T20I half-century in seven innings with a stunning six off Ferguson.

IND 109/2 after 13.2 overs: OUT! Boult returns to the attack and gets the key wicket of Rohit. It was a slow bouncer and the India skipper pulled it straight to short-fine. He departs for 48 off 36. The new batter is Pant.

IND 109/1 after 13 overs: Santner finishes with tidy figures of 1/19 from his four overs. New Zealand would’ve wanted him to get more wickets, though.

IND 104/1 after 12 overs: Suryakumar goes after Astle! The right-hander slams a six straight over before pulling one for four. He moves on to 37 off 26. Rohit is batting on 46 off 32.

IND 89/1 after 11 overs: Another economical over from Santner. The Indian batters are avoiding taking risks against the left-arm spinner.

IND 85/1 after 10 overs: Ferguson was in the middle of a nice over but Suryakumar ends it with a flick over mid-wicket for four. India need 80 off 60.

IND 79/1 after 9 overs: Rohit attempts a slog against Astle and slices it, luckily for him it lands safely. Suryakumar then ends the over with a six between long-on and deep mid-wicket.

IND 67/1 after 8 overs: New Zealand lose a review. Santner struck Suryakumar on the back leg after the right-hander attempted a sweep, the umpire said not out and DRS showed impact outside off. Fine over from the left-arm spinner, though.

IND 63/1 after 7 overs: Leg-spinner Todd Astle joins the attack and bowls a full-toss first up, Rohit leans forward and drives it over cover for four.

IND 50/1 after 5.1 overs: OUT! Santner strikes with his first ball. It was short but Rahul pulled it straight to the fielder in the deep. He walks back for 15 off 14. The new batter is Suryakumar.

IND 50/0 after 5 overs: Huge over for India! Rahul pulls one for six before Rohit hits two fours (the second one should’ve been called a wide though) and hits a pull of his own for six. Boult kept banging it in and kept getting punished. India need 115 off 90.

IND 29/0 after 4 overs: Solid, fiery start from Ferguson as New Zealand look to break the opening partnership. The right-arm pacer, who missed out on the T20 World Cup due to injury, touches the 150 kmph mark in his first over.

IND 24/0 after 3 overs: A couple of balls were a bit too wide from Southee and it allowed Rohit to throw his hands at the ball and get two fours. Then, the seamer went a bit too short to the India skipper off the last ball and he was pulled away for a six. 15 runs off the over.

IND 9/0 after 2 overs: Tight over by Boult from the other end. Rohit Sharma needing four balls to get off the mark.

IND 7/0 after 1 over: One edged four to get things going for India. Southee got it to move away from Rahul and the edge flew just over first slip. Important partnership for India and NZ will know that too.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are in the middle to begin the chase.

New Zealand finish with 164/6

Chapman and Guptill put on a solid partnership for the second wicket and the Kiwis threatened to post a huge total at one stage. But India will be happy with how they fought back.

NZ 162/6 after 19.5 overs: OUT! Siraj cleans up Ravindra. He’s delivering a superb last over after hurting his left hand.

Siraj’s left hand is heavily bandaged but he’s ready to resume his over.

Oh dear, Santner drives it back powerfully and it strikes Siraj on his left hand in his follow through. The pacer calls for the physio immediately and seems to have split his webbing. He’s bleeding and in pain.

NZ 157/5 after 19 overs: Brilliant penultimate over from Bhuvneshwar, just five runs from it. He returns with fine figures of 2/24 from his four overs.

NZ 153/5 after 18.2 overs: OUT! Bhuvneshwar gets Seifert! The ball goes miles up and Suryakumar does well to hold on to the catch. India are pulling things back nicely.

NZ 150/4 after 17.2 overs: SIX & OUT! Guptill hits a 98-meter six and gives Chahar a stare. He then attempts another big hit but finds the fielder in the deep (a splendid catch by Iyer), and this time it’s Chahar who’s doing the staring. Guptill walks back for a brilliant 70 off 42. The new batter is Rachin Ravindra.

NZ 144/3 after 17 overs: Dropped! Oh dear, that was a sitter. Seifert hit the ball straight to deep extra cover but it went through Axar’s hands for four. That had to be taken. Bhuvneshwar the unlucky bowler.

NZ 130/3 after 16 overs: Seifert gets going with a sweep for four as Axar finishes his spell with figures of 0/31 from four overs.

Ashwin ended his spell tonight with a memorable over...

NZ 123/3 after 15 overs: Fifty for Guptill! He gets there in 31 balls and with a six off Siraj. This is Guptill’s first T20I half-century against India. The new batter is Seifert.

Ashwin finishes with excellent figures of 2/23 from his four overs.

NZ 110/3 after 13.5 overs: OUT! R Ashwin has two wickets in one over! He beats Glenn Phillips’s outside edge and strikes the right-hander on the back leg. The umpire raises his finger and DRS goes India’s way. Phillips departs for a three-ball duck.

NZ 110/2 after 13.2 overs: OUT! Ashwin breaks the partnership! He bowls it slow and gets sharp turn to rattle Chapman’s stumps. Super delivery to end a fine knock. The left-hander walks back for 63 off 50.

NZ 106/1 after 13 overs: 100-run partnership comes up in 76 balls. The acceleration in the last few overs has been impressive. Chahar returns to the attack and ends the over by conceding a boundary.

NZ 96/1 after 12 overs: Fifty for Mark Chapman! First T20I half-century by the left-hander for New Zealand. He gets there in 45 balls and with a six off Axar Patel. The over ends with a Chapman square-cut for four. Another big over for the Kiwis.

NZ 81/1 after 11 overs: Guptill mistimes a pull but it falls safely between three fielders. The right-hander then picks a slower delivery early and hits it over long-off for six. And he ends the over with a powerful drive down the ground for four. Siraj returns to the attack and bowls an expensive second over.

It’s been a while since this happened...

NZ 65/1 after 10 overs: Top over from Axar, just three runs from it. Chapman tried to get a big hit but the left-arm spinner’s variations ensured he couldn’t connect.

NZ 62/1 after 9 overs: Seven runs come from Ashwin’s third over. India need the Delhi Capitals spin duo of Ashwin and Axar to strike soon.

NZ 55/1 after 8 overs: Axar joins the attack and bowls a decent first over, seven runs come from it.

NZ 48/1 after 7 overs: Four! Ashwin bowls a good over but drops the last ball short and Chapman whips it away for four. The left-hander moves on to 35 off 31. This has been a solid stand for New Zealand.

NZ 41/1 after 6 overs: Big over! New Zealand end the powerplay on a high. Chahar changes ends and returns to the attack, only to concede 15 runs in his second over. Guptill pulls one for four, before Chapman flicks one for four and then ends the over with a flat pull for six. Rohit, meanwhile, was off the field to get his finger looked at by the physio. But he’s back now.

NZ 26/1 after 5 overs: Ashwin comes on to bowl and mixes it up nicely, six runs come from the off-spinner’s first over. No real turn on offer. Guptill, meanwhile, moves on to 4 off 6.

NZ 20/1 after 4 overs: Chapman survives, again! This time Rohit takes a good look and fires a throw but misses. He had one stump to aim at, and Chapman wouldn’t have made it if it was a direct hit. Tidy first over from Siraj.

NZ 15/1 after 3 overs: Chapman survives! Bhuvneshwar asks for the slip fielder to be removed, he then gets the left-hander’s outside edge, and the ball flies past Pant for four. It would’ve been a straightforward catch for first slip.

NZ 11/1 after 2 overs: First boundary of the match! Chahar bowls it full and wide, Chapman drives it in the air through the gap on the off side for four. Unlike Bhuvneshwar, not much swing for Chahar in his first over.

NZ 1/1 after 0.3 overs: OUT! Bhuvneshwar Kumar with an absolute peach in the first over! He gets one to swing in drastically and the in-form Daryl Mitchell is clean bowled for a first-ball duck.

7.00 pm: The players are out on the field and we’re ready for play. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the new ball in hand. Here we go!
