Full time stats, India 5-1 Germany: India were dominant for large parts of the match statistically and finally they got the scoreboard to reflect it as well. India gets their World Cup campaign off to a solid start, winning 5-1 against Wales. Next up, the big clash against Germany tomorrow.
“I’m very proud. We are a very good team. The first and second half we didn’t put enough pressure, but we were very good in the third and fourth quarter.” - Salima Tete, player of the match.
Player of the match: India captain Salima Tete. Had to be her, really. Immense through the middle of the pitch.
FINAL HOOTER: India 5-1 Wales It was tight for a while in the first half, and Wales started Q3 well too but from there on, India took control and ran with it. Salima Tete was immense and Deepika was really good too.
Q4, India 5-1 Wales, GOAL INDIA! Tete injects, Lalremsiami stops, and Deepika places a drag flick to the left of the goalkeeper. Nice technique! She was a potential Player of the Match candidate and she’s scored too.
Q4, India 4-1 Wales: It was Ajmina’s shot that was parried straight to Lalrindiki, who chips home comfortably for India’s fourth. India have another PC now.
Q4, India 4-1 Wales: GOAL INDIA! The hit from PC is saved, Horrell once again having to remain sharp but India recycle the ball sharply and Lalrindiki is there to apply the finishing touch!
Q4, India 3-1 Wales: Deepika might be a contender for POTM alongside Salima. She won the PC.
Q4, India 3-1 Wales: Another chance goes begging for India. Deepika does well to fashion a chance, the final touch didn’t come. Soon after a PC for India.
Q4, India 3-1 Wales: 6:30 to go, India finishing strongly.
Q4, India 3-1 Wales: A good drag flick there, we have mostly seen hits so far from PCs. Deepika with a shot on goal, rushed down very well by the Welsh defence.
Q4, India 3-1 Wales: PC for India, clinched by Salima it seemed.
Q4, India 3-1 Wales: CHANCE! BIG ONE! India are 3v1 there, Deepika does well to draw the GK forward and cuts it back to Mumtaz who cannot get a powerful enough shot on goal.
Q4, India 3-1 Wales: A shot on the Welsh goal is saved, not quite sure who got the shot away. But India will do well to make sure they don’t take the foot off the pedal.
Q4, India 3-1 Wales: INDIA in the lead as we go into Q4. Looks like Khushboo might have been in goal for Q3, we missed that swap. But Bichu is back between the posts now and is called into action early by Wales.
End of Q3, India 3-1 Wales: A great start to the half from both sides but India assert their dominance on this match as Q3 went on. Deservingly ahead.
Q3, India 3-1 Wales: A break in play as Sangita Kumari takes an awkward tumble in the circle. She looks in pain but is able to walk off the field.
Q3, India 3-1 Wales: From the resulting scrap, another PC. Salima’s hit on goal is wide! Just about though.
Q3, India 3-1 Wales: Excellent interception by Salima Tete, she controls and sends it forward to Mumtaz Khan. Goes one-on-one with Horrell and slots home comfortably. Now India will have a PC. Priyanka with a hit to the far post, not deflected in. But another PC. This time Salima with a hit, Wales hang on.
Q3, India 3-1 Wales: GOAL INDIA! Another field goal, this time Mumtaz Khan finishes calmly after a good ball into the circle. All smiles there, the Indians. Well worked goal.
Q3, India 2-1 Wales: This is actually a brilliant start to the half from both sides. Great attacking work.
Q3, India 2-1 Wales: Oh nearly a third! Vaishnavi with a shot on goal, the final touch comes from an Indian forward and it goes wide.
Q3, India 2-1 Wales: GOAL INDIA! It was Wales who started the Q well with a PC but India come down the other end and retake the lead. A ball into the circle from midfield, looked like there were a couple of deflections but Lalrindiki is claiming it and she gets it too. Smart forward play!
Q3 about to start, India 1-1 Wales: India had 10 shots on goal, to Wales 2. More possession for the team in blue too. But where it matters, it is 1-1.
Half time: First half ends at 1-1. Wales started to find their footing and increase pressure on the Indians in Q2. Eventually the equalizer came in the 26th minute through Millie Holme. Work to do for Salima Tete and Co next half, they can’t quite afford to drop points here with Germany to come tomorrow.
Half time: India 1-1 Wales
So many chances created, but the lead was still 1-0 and that usually means the opponent has a chance to make you pay for the smallest of errors. Half about to end.
Q2, India 1-1 Wales: GOAL WALES! And this is what happens when you are not able to make your advantage count. Good move down the left byline, the ball is pushed into the danger area, the Indian defence unable to deal with it. Milli Holme’s shot squeezes past Bichu in goal and Priyanka, it seemed, on the goal line. Soft goal to concede.
Q2, India 1-0 Wales: It’s still pouring.
Q2, India 1-0 Wales: Horrell nearly misjudged a high ball completely but recovers to clear it before Sangita can tap in from a yard.
Q2, India 1-0 Wales: Lalrindiki is through on goal from the left channel and she does really well to put herself 1v1 with the GK but the final shot is a bit tame. Great build-up, the finish lacking.
Q2, India 1-0 Wales: Lost the stream there briefly but looked like India had another chance to extend the lead that was thwarted by Welsh GK. Deepika has another shot on goal soon, but goes wide. India doing all the attacking, would really like a bigger lead to show for it. 8:30 mins to go in the half.
Q2, India 1-0 Wales: Lalremsiami nearly finds a forward through on goal with a pass through the channel but it was slightly overhit and the GK came out to clear. Nice 3D skills from an Welsh attacke down the other end but India don’t fall for it.
END OF Q1, India 1-0 Wales: Vaishnavi with good 3D skills at the edge of the circle and then gets a shot away. Saved well by Ffion Horell who has had a really busy quarter.
Q1, India 1-0 Wales: Mumtaz Khan does brilliantly to win the ball back just outside the Welsh circle and dribbles through on goal. Welsh defence hangs on.
Q1, India 1-0 Wales: Sharmila Devi could be a huge attacking threat for India in this tournament and she does well there to force a couple of half chances. Wales hang on.
Q1, India 1-0 Wales: The Wales go for a hit on goal, not a flick. Bichu Devi saves it, not the most difficult ones too. India’s lead intact.
Q1, India 1-0 Wales: A PC for Wales now.
Q1, India 1-0 Wales: GOAL INDIA! Sangita Kumari with the shot on goal from the edge of the circle, the late deflection comes in from Lalremsiami. India in front, nice and early.
Q1, India 0-0 Wales: An early PC for India, that move came from winning the ball back high up the pitch. Deepika with a drag flick, it is on target but saved by the Welsh GK.
Q1, India 0-0 Wales: PUSHBACK!
