Michael Phelps won his 19th gold medal in Olympics history (23 in total) after helping the United States down France to win the 4 x 400 metre freestyle event. The 31-year-old's overall medal tally is 19 gold medals, two silver and two bronze medals.
The US and France were involved in a nail-biting final and the latter even took the lead midway. Phelps went second and gave his country the lead at the 200 metre mark.
The multiple gold medallist had such a big influence on proceedings that his team even managed to take slight lead. However, the French came back into the contest but the lead Phelps had given proved to be the difference.
Phelps continued to build on his reputation of being the most decorated Olympian of all time. Overall, it was a memorable day for his country's swimmers. Katie Ledecky belted her way to a world record in the 400 metre freestyle event, comfortably winning her third gold medal. All of 19, USA's Ledecky's new world record stands at 3:56.66, beating the previous one by two whole seconds. Leah Smith, also of the US, won bronze in the same event.
