Twenty-four-year-old weightlifter Sathish Sivalingam failed to qualify for finals of the men's 77 kg category on Wednesday, after finishing fourth in Group B. Sivalingam, who works as a senior clerk with the Southern Railways in Chennai, was the sole male weightlifter to represent India in the Rio Olympics. He had previously won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Sivalingam lifted a total of 329 kg, with his best effort in the snatch category being 148 kg and 181 kg in the clean and jerk. He had lifted 153 kg and 186 kg in his third attempt, but they were registered as failed attempts by the judges.
