India's day of misery continued in Rio as Dutee Chand finished 7th in her Heat of the 100 metres race for women – and 50th overall – with a timing of 11.69 seconds. With only the top two from each heat qualifying for the next stage, this marked the end of the road for the Indian athlete in this event.

Disappointingly, Chand came nowhere close to the 11.24 seconds she had clocked at the XXVI International Meeting G Kosanov Memorial in Kazakhstan in June 2016 to win the silver. The second-placed qualifier from her group, Poland's Ewa Swoboda, actually finished in 11.24 seconds. So had Chand matched her own earlier performance, she would have been in the running.

There were no surprises as Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce qualified comfortably with the best timing in the field of 10.96 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago's Michelle-Lee Ahye was second-fastest with 11 seconds.
