Wrestler Sandeep Tomar lost to Russian Victor Lebedev 3-7 on points in the pre-quarter-final of the men's 57 kg wrestling at the Rio Olympics. The chances of the Indian winning a medal withered away with Lebedev losing his quarter-final match to Iranian Hassan Rahimi.
Tomar was given a passivity warning and Lebedev was awarded a point at the end of a 30-second period.
The Indian started attacking the Russian who defended well. Lebedev then reversed a hold from Tomar to pin the Indian and gain two more points.
Lebedev scored another two points in a flurry as Tomar trailed 5-0 after four minutes on the clock. Tomar started clawing his way back into the match as he notched two takedowns in a row to score three points.
But the experienced Lebedev stemmed Tomar's attacking flow and countered for his fourth takedown of the match to gain two more points. Tomar couldn't manage a comeback as time ran out.
