The second week of the English Premier League began with Manchester United beating Southampton 2-0 on Friday with the help of Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring two goals. After a terrific Saturday that saw Liverpool being stunned by Burnley, only four teams have won their first two games of the season. Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Hull City headline the table with the Red Devils sitting pretty on top. By contrast, Leicester City and Arsenal lost their opening game of the campaign and were held to a goalless draw when both the sides met at the King Power Stadium.
City thump Stoke at the Britannia
Sergio Aguero and Nolito scored two each as Manchester City beat Stoke City 4-1 to continue their winning start under Pep Guardiola. Being played at the Britannia Stadium, City were aggressive from the start and never let Stoke gain the upper hand. City drew first blood when Aguero converted from the spot. The Argentine scored another goal within 10 minutes to give City a 2-0 cushion. In the second half, Nolito came on to score two late goals and seal City's win over Stoke. Bojan Krkic scored the lone goal for Stoke City so save his team from a 4-0 drubbing.
Inept defending sees Liverpool "Burn"t
Burnley stunned Liverpool 2-0 to grab their first points of the season. This match was over within the first forty minutes with goals from Sam Vokes and Andre Gray leaving Liverpool in tatters with their first defeat of the season. The defensive woes of Jurgen Klopp’s team continue and it is an issue that still has to be addressed. Even with 81% possession, Liverpool was unable to find the net despite having attempted 26 shots. Liverpool were a shadow of the attacking force they were in last week's thrilling 4-3 win at Arsenal.
Costa nets late winner again
Chelsea rallied from a goal down to beat Watford 2-1 in their second encounter of the season. Etienne Capoue had put Watford ahead early in the second half as the hosts took control of the game. However, Chelsea knew that they had to dig deep if they were to win the game and also let the other clubs know that they mean business this season. On came substitute Michy Batshuayi, who equalised for Chelsea with his first goal for the club. Rejuvenated Diego Costa provided the second goal as he clinched on to Cesc Fabregas's pass and slid the ball under Heurelho Gomes with three minutes left. The win gives Chelsea boss Antonio Conte a 100% start after Monday's victory against West Ham.
Can Wenger bounce back?
Last season’s champions Leicester City were held to a goalless draw by Arsenal at the King Power Stadium. Leicester City and last season's runners-up Arsenal are still waiting for their first win of the new campaign after defeats in their opening game last week. Both teams were looking to bag three points, but could not find a breakthrough in an intensely fought game, eventually settling for a point each. With Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea already five points ahead of the Gunners, Arsene Wenger has to find his mojo or else prepare for an ill-fated season ahead.
Koeman gets the Everton machine rolling
Ronald Koeman registered his first win as Everton manager after his side came from a goal down to beat West Brom 2-1. Gareth Barry's close-range header secured Everton’s victory after the home side went in front inside 10 minutes owing to Gareth McAuley’s goal. However, Kevin Mirallas rolled in an equaliser just before the break to go into halftime with the scoreboard reading 1-1.
Wanyama saves the day for Spurs
Tottenham Hotspurs beat Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace 1-0 in a drab encounter at White Hart Lane. Victor Wanyama's first goal for Tottenham gave them three points as the Kenyan midfielder headed home from a corner with eight minutes to go. Palace have now lost their opening two games and are yet to get on the points table. The Eagles announced the £27 million signing of Liverpool striker Christian Benteke before the match but couldn’t be a part of the game then.
