World No. 1 Sania Mirza won the Connecticut Open women's doubles title with partner Monica Niculescu of Romania, ahead of the US Open at Flushing Meadows starting on Monday. Mirza and Niculescu won their first title together with a straight-sets victory over the pairing of Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine and Chuang Chia Jung of Taiwan in the final.
The Indo-Romanian pair won 7-5 6-4 in the summit clash, which lasted one hour and 30 minutes. The last time Mirza and Niculescu played with each other was back in 2010, when they joined forces to reach the quarter-finals at the Western and Southern Open. They played that one tournament together before calling time on the partnership.
Mirza recently parted ways with Swiss Martina Hingis after winning 14 titles together. She partnered with Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic at the Cincinnati Masters last week and they won their debut tournament, defeating Hingis and American Coco Vandeweghe.
Despite winning a title, Mirza and Niculescu both made it clear that this partnership was short-term and both will return to their regular partners for the US Open. Mirza will partner Strycova at the US Open and Niculescu will play with American Vania King.
