Manchester City beat West Ham United 3-1 on Sunday thanks to Raheem Sterling leading the way with two goals. Midfielder Fernandinho scored the other goal for City. There were jitters in the home side when Michail Antonio got one back for the Hammers, but City held on to the three points. New City manager Pep Guardiola has now enjoyed five wins from as many games and three straight victories in the Premier League, joining rivals Manchester United and Chelsea at the top.
By the 18th minute, the Sky Blues were 2-0 up. David Silva was at his best and had a hand in both of Sterling's goals. Kevin de Bruyne's delightful free-kick from the right found Fernandinho at the back post, who nodded the ball home. It was Willy Caballero who started in goal ahead of new signing Claudio Bravo, and the former made a calamitous error to let Antonio get one back for his side.
City looked closer to a Guardiola side in this game, relaxed in possession, which they comfortably hogged, but relentless and single-minded when it came to winning the ball back. New signings Nolito and Leroy Sane were blended in seamlessly and so did another summer purchase, Ilkay Gundogan. It was Nolito who squared the ball for Sterling's first goal. During stoppage time, Silva found Sterling with a simple pass after striking the post.
The only concern for City after the match was the possibility of striker Sergio Aguero missing the upcoming Manchester derby after a nasty foul. He faces a three-match ban after appearing to elbow West Ham's Winston Reid.
Boos ring around Hawthorns
West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough played out a drab affair at the Hawthorns for a 0-0 draw. There was barely any good passage of play throughout the game, but the chorus of boos that rang around the stadium would have surely not gone unnoticed – the West Brom fans are disgruntled with the lack of transfer activity over the summer. Even their own players weren't spared and Saido Berahino was also given a hostile reception when he decided to come on.
