Rafael Nadal bowed out of the US Open after losing his fourth-round encounter to 24th seed Lucas Pouille on Monday. The Spaniard was in sublime form coming into the second week at Flushing Meadows. However, he was outgunned by Frenchman and lost the match 6-1 2-6 6-4 3-6 7-6(6).
For Nadal, this year will be hard to stomach as he missed a part of the season, which includes the Wimbledon and French Open, owing to a wrist injury. The only silver lining is the gold medal he won at the Rio Olympics in the men’s doubles competition.
Djokovic marches on
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was at his best when he destroyed Britain’s Kyle Edmund in straight sets on Monday. Djokovic thrashed the World No. 84 6-2 6-1 6-4 to book his place in the last eight. The defending champion will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a spot in the semi-finals.
Tsonga crushes American hopes
Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ended the hopes of an American reaching the last eight at New York for the first time since 2011 after he beat Jack Sock 6-3 6-3 6-7(7) 6-2. Tsonga, the ninth seed, was in complete control of the match except for the third set, which the American bagged in a match that lasted for more than three hours.
Kerber rolls on
Angelique Kerber beat Petra Kvitova in straight sets to book her place in the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows. The second seed beat the Czech 6-3 7-5 in a match that lasted for 88 minutes.
Wozniacki continues dream run
Caroline Wozniacki beat eighth-seeded American Madison Keys to reach the quarter-finals. Wozniacki beat the American 6-3 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and will face unseeded Anastasija Sevastova for a place in the semi-finals.
Vinici eases into quarters
Italian Roberta Vinci beat Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 7-6(5) 6-2 to book her place in the quarters. Last year’s runner-up did not have to break a sweat against the World No. 99. However, next up is second seed Angelique Keber for a place in the semis.
