Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, who tore into his team's performance during their weekend defeat to rivals Manchester City, made a ruthless start at its aftermath, axing skipper Wayne Rooney for the side's trip to Feyenoord for the opening match of their Europa League campaign. Mourinho confirmed that United's teenage sensation, Marcus Rashford, will start the game.
Rooney, who stands second in Manchester United's all-time goal-scoring charts, showed no visible sign of being injured against City, and had also taken part in training. Rooney was not the only notable absentee as defender Luke Shaw, along with wingers Jesse Lingard and Antonio Valencia, were also omitted from the final squad. Phil Jones and summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan also failed to make the cut.
The Rotterdam-based side have got off to a flying start in the Eredivisie, winning all five of their games so far. United play their game against Feyenoord in the Europa League on 15th September, 10.30 pm IST.
Manchester United's 20-man squad for Feyenoord:
David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Sam Johnstone; Matteo Darmian, Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Marcus Rojo, Chris Smalling; Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Memphis Depay, Paul Pogba, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ashley Young; Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford.
