Iran’s Siamand Rahman became the first powerlifter to break the 300 kg barrier as he won gold by lifting 310 kg in the powerlifting final of the 107 kg event at the Rio Paralympics.
Rahman, called the "world's strongest Paralympian", was defending his London gold from 2012. He took a lead with a lift of 270 kg on his first attempt, lifted an extraordinary 300 kg on his second and then upped the record with lifts of 305 kg and 310 kg.
The Iranian athlete's world record mark of 310 kg is equivalent to the weight of three baby elephants. Amr Mosaad of Egypt bagged silver by lifting 235 kg, which was 75 kg less than Rahman's show of strength. Jordan's Jamil Elshebli took bronze with a 234 kg lift.
