Spanish world No. 14 David Ferrer took less than 90 minutes to beat the 137th-ranked Saketh Myneni of India in straight sets in their Davis Cup World Group Playoff singles encounter on Friday in Delhi. Ferrer won the match 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 28 minutes to give Spain a 2-0 lead in the tie.
In the first match of the evening, world No. 203 Ramkumar Ramanathan had managed to briefly take the Delhi crowd's focus off Rafael Nadal on the bench, as he stretched Feliciano Lopez, ranked 177 places above him, to four sets before losing. Unfortunately for India, Myneni was hardly able to do the same.
Myneni won his opening service game, but did not taste any more success in the first set as the Spaniard brought in his A-game from the start to win it 6-1 in just 22 minutes. Despite his opponent's superiority, the big-serving Myneni only had himself to blame as he committed four double faults in the opening set.
The second set followed a similar pattern as Myneni had no response to the Spaniard's return game. Ferrer raced to a 5-0 lead and it looked like Myneni would not win a single game, before the Indian actually managed to break the Spaniard. The longest game of the match thus far followed, as Myneni again struggled to hold on to his serve, before just about managing to do it. Ferrer allowed no more let-ups as he served for the set again and took it 6-2.
Myneni was broken early again in the third set, and then again, as he slipped to 0-4 down before finally holding serve. Ferrer then lost no more time in closing the set 6-1 and clinching the match for his country.
