Chess Grandmaster P Harikrishna became the second Indian to break into the top 10 world rankings, according to the latest list released by the game's global body FIDE. This is the first time in the history of Indian chess that two players figure in the world's top 10 ranking list. The other Indian GM who is in the elite list is former world champion Vishwanathan Anand, who is in seventh place with 2,779 points. Harikrishna has 2,768 points and is in tenth place. The former world junior champion hails from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.
In the women's category, two Indian GMs figure in the top 10 club with Koneru Humpy (2,557 points) in fourth and Harika Dronavalli (2,543 points) in sixth. The world's 100th-ranked player is GM K Sasikiran, also from India. As a country, India is fifth in the world rankings. The top four chess countries are Russia, the United States, China and Ukraine.
