Former Bengaluru FC coach Ashley Westwood signed on as the coach of Malaysian side Penang FC for the 2017 season on Monday after rejecting several offers from across Asia and a few European clubs.
The 40-year-old Englishman was instrumental in taking Bengaluru to the top of Indian football after make their debut in 2013. During his three-year tenure with the 2016 AFC Cup runners-up, Westwood won two I-League titles along with the Federation Cup in 2014-’15.
Bengaluru also managed to hold its own in the AFC Cup, finishing in the Round of 16 in 2015 and qualifiying to the quarters of this season’s competition under Westwood before the team embarked on a dream run to the final under Westwood’s successor Albert Roca.
Penang FC have been struggling in the Malaysian Super League, finishing 10th and only a point above the relegation zone in the 2016 season.
