Bayern Munich, the German champions, are back to the top of the table in the Bundesliga following a 1-0 win over Darmstadt on the weekend, albeit on goal difference. Douglas Costa was at the forefront, unlocking the resolute Darmstadt defence with a ferocious left-footed strike.
From 35 yards out, Costa took control of the ball, took another touch and let one fly from his left foot. The ball hit the corner of the post and sneaked its way into goal. What was special was the distance from which the Brazilian decided to have a go. Only the best in the business have been successful from that far out and the goal vaguely evokes memories of Cristiano Ronaldo’s audacious 40-yard screamer against FC Porto in the Uefa Champions League while playing for Manchester United. Here, though, the former Shakhtar Donetsk man had to get his angle spot on.
Costa’s goal proved to be the difference between the two teams in a hard-fought battle, helping Bayern Munich to the top of the Bundesliga table – the defending champions currently lead RB Leipzig on goal difference.
