Arsenal were demolished 5-1 by Bayern Munich in their round-of-16 Champions League clash at the Allianz Arena on Thursday.
Arsenal, who have been knocked out from same stage of competition for the past six seasons, were on the score sheet owing to a first-half goal by Alexis Sanchez.
However, the goal was lucky to come by as Sanchez missed a penalty, but quickly netted the ball on the rebound to equalise after Arjen Robben’s opener. The two teams went into the break locked at 1-1.
Bayern were a different team in the second half as Robert Lewandowski scored the second goal for the night. Thiago Alcantara then scored a brace to make it 4-1. Substitute Thomas Muller, who is having a dismal season, smashed the fifth against a clueless Arsenal defence.
Arsene Wenger faces an impossible task when his side hosts Bayern at home in two weeks given the huge goal deficit. With the FA Cup being the only possibility of silverware this season, Wenger is left with no choice but to shift his focus from the Champions League campaign after a disastrous night in Germany.
