Roy Makaay may be working as a youth coach at Feyenoord these days, but the Dutchman barring a wundergol has etched his name into Champions League folklore on account of having scored the fastest goal in the competition ever.
One of the deadliest attackers in Europe during his time, Makaay moved from Deportivo La Coruna to Bayern Munich for a club record 18.75 million Euros at that time, after scoring 29 goals for Super Depor in the 2002-’03 season and winning the European Golden Boot. Makaay, incidentally also scored a CL hat-trick against the Bavarians in his time with the Spanish team.
On March 7, 2007, with Bayern trailing 3-2 against Real Madrid from the first leg of their pre-quarterfinal tie, Roberto Carlos miscontrolled the ball soon after kick-off, as Hasan Salihamidzic stole the ball and squared it to Makaay, who finished it past Iker Casillas in the Madrid goal.
Bayern would go on to win the match 2-1, progressing on away goals but would lose the quarterfinals to eventual winners AC Milan. That would be the Dutchman’s last season with Munchen, as he would transfer to Feyenoord a Bayern legend, having scored 102 goals in 178 appearances, earning himself the nickname Das Phantom (The Phantom).
