The second leg of the Champions League round of 16 match between Arsenal and Bayern Munich mostly went according to script – Arsenal lost and there were calls for Arsene Wenger’s ouster. However, the biggest talking point of the big defeat, 10-2 on aggregate, wasn’t the Gunners’ shambolic display, but the cameo appearance of striker Alexis Sanchez laughing on the bench as his team struggled.
While the reason may be unclear (or may be not so much for fans following the Wenger-Sanchez spat) it was certainly strange to see the Chilean striker, who started the game against Bayern unlike the one against Liverpool, so jovial while his team played with 10 men and had 5 goals scored against them.
Sanchez was withdrawn in the 72nd minute of the match and joined Petr Cech on the bench, where the incident happened. There were several videos to suggest that he was sniggering, and some people on social media even went on to say that Sanchez gifted a goal to Bayern. Whatever the reason, there was enough bad blood from fans and some more jokes on Arsenal all over Twitter. From rants to conspiracy theories, check out how Twitter reacted to Sanchez-smile-gate.
